Yuri Gagarin, first in space





 











He was a diminutive 157 centimetres in height, chosen to fit well into his somewhat cramped Vostok 1 capsule. Literally a national treasure to the Soviet regime, he was kept out of any further orbital launches to ensure his safety.  He died in a MIG 15 with a colleague due to a series of errors in 1968.
