Amadeo de Souza Cardoso 1887-1918

Cardoso was a Portuguese painter during the Cubist period leading up to the First World War. He moved to Paris in his twenties to further his education. There he met Brancusi, Modigliani, Stein, Gris and a host of others at that seminal period in modern art.

He allied himself with the Cubist and the Futurist movements. Importantly, he was represented by eight pieces at the Armory Show in New York in 1913 (seven were purchased).  This good looking man was one of only a handful of Modernists in Portugal at the time of his death.
