Yet again, Alan Arkin's moustache in The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming (1966)

Ok this one is uff, the fuel of school boy fantasy.  I was not even in double digits when I first saw this film in the early 70s, but even on a black and white TV Alan Arkin's fictional character shone through.  Another Jewish man, another moustache.  You can see a pattern emerging, can you not, reader?  He played such a sympathetic - if slightly single-minded - mariner in the film.  As the man in charge of the scouting party he looked out for his men, of course.  That was paramount in his mind.  He only knew he had to get the fuck out of New England, dead stop.  But the moustache and the cap and the leather jacket was an almost genetic nudge to my gay sensibilities. I was um, enthralled .. with every desperate nuance of Lieutenant Rozanov.

This photo is quite late and it may have been taken in '68, the year he was murdered.  Something about the Carling in his hand and his jean jacket and the mod glasses he wears that speak to me in this way.  It is an impression merely.  There is no tag to the exact date of the photo.  Nineteen sixty-eight was quite a stunning year, so modern, soo modern, and presaging so many of the terrible things we take for granted in the present.  It is interesting also that he is in the back seat - and drinking.  By this time he had been to court more than a few times for DUIs, and is riding in the back because he can't by law be at the wheel.  An inveterate drunk, he needed one in hand.  Requiescat in pace.

My money is on Hurst.  He's somewhat lesser known than Reems, if not as prolific cinematically.  Harry became very famous after the government started chasing him (and A-list Hollywood banded to his side to help him win in appeal).  And he may have invented the 'porn 'stache' unto which many later straight porn men aspired, but Hurst's magnificent all-round sexy bear fur wins out for me - everytime haha!  These hairy Jewish guys were in my adolescent fantasies, it's just a pity Judiasm comes with Bris 😅
